Current politics keeping you on your toes? The presidential election that took place exactly 200 years ago was also a wild one, with five candidates, a host of unforeseen and volatile issues, and a disputed outcome. After the winner was declared by the House of Representatives, one of the candidates cried foul, saying that a “corrupt bargain” had deprived him of the presidency (or as we might say, that the election was “stolen”). This talk not only charts the story of this messy election, but also focuses on the political changes roiling underneath. It will give you a framework for understanding the political context of the generation before the Civil War.
