What they say about us

As a newly retired teacher, I found I needed to continue to learn, so finding ICL was a lifesaver. I have been taking and leading classes since 2002. Enlightening, engaging, and fun!

Terri Collins

The highlight of the Virtual Classes for me is seeing familiar faces I’ve been missing. I recommend the classes to members and encourage those who participate to spread the word!

I was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago – first in Hyde Park then South Shore. I subsequently moved to Schaumburg and went to Harper College and Roosevelt University. In 2003, because I had the luxury of flex time at work, I was able to take study groups at ICL. The first class I took was “Foods of the World” where we talked about food, then went to different ethnic restaurants to eat. While I went back to work, the other classmates stayed for hours talking. It was great.

I grew up on the north side of Chicago and attended Felician College and DePaul University.

For much of my professional life I worked as a legal secretary at two large Chicago law firms in their suburban offices. I loved my job and my bosses. I had worked in accounting for a number of years, but I always went back to law.

I volunteered for Lambs’ Farm, teaching tennis to adult athletes at a Libertyville tennis club. I taught English to nonnative speakers at the Read to Learn program. I am a greeter at my Church and work in the food pantry.

My husband Selwyn and I have been residents of the Schaumburg/Hoffman Estates area for over 50 years where we raised our two sons. We have four grandchildren from grade school through college age. I am a former special education teacher with a degree from the University of Iowa. I retired from Barrington Bank where I developed a senior travel and enrichment program called Platinum Adventures. I also worked for NBD and First Chicago Banks in marketing and community outreach positions and as Executive Director with a local United Way. I have held volunteer leadership positions with numerous community organizations including chambers of commerce and the United Way. I presently serve on our townhouse homeowners association board, on the Pace Citizens Advisory Board and the Sustainability Commission for the Village of Hoffman Estates.

Is There a Flower in You?

This Study Group was presented by Judy Krakowiak and Mariann Fitzgerald.

It was fun doing this class, chatting with the other women and seeing everyone’s beautiful art work. Judy is great; very patient and very funny. She makes it look easy. Just follow her instructions and you will have beautiful gift bags to share or maybe not share.
